Beachside student residences

Glancy Nicholls Architects were initially appointed as Executive Architects for Phase1A, working with Vinci Construction and St Modwen at Swansea University Bay Campus. This phase, consisting of student residential accommodation, was completed in September 2015, forming the heart of the student experience.

The campus development carried its own intricate issues – size, scale, and design to withstand wind and rain conditions due to its beachside location.

The second phase, 1B, was commissioned following the success of the first phase and GNA worked with Galliford Try and St Modwen to deliver this part of the scheme. This section of the development consisted of 545 student residential bedrooms, a sports hall, gymnasium, creche and student union offices.

We are currently working on the masterplan for future phases. The scheme has delivered a total of 2,418 new student bedrooms, along with other facilities including a gymnasium, student union recreation area and sports hall.

Spotlight

Swansea University Bay Campus was a significant addition to the university’s residential portfolio and the existing Singleton campus. The Transit site as it was referred to was part of the former BP oil refinery, which was demolished, and the beach front land remediated to provide a brown field plateau for the new development.

The beachside location of the development brought complex considerations to the design due to the environmental conditions. Glancy Nicholls ensured the design was suitable to withstanding these weather conditions.

Providing a new vibrant campus with contemporary residential bedrooms, sports hall, gymnasium, student union facilities formulated a new student experience for the university.
