Pebble Mill Student Village

Nestled within the leafy suburbs of Edgbaston, this new student accommodation scheme for Select Property provides a peaceful sanctuary for its residents. The former BBC Pebble Mill studios were replaced by an open-sided courtyard development, providing vistas beyond the gardens towards the University of Birmingham and the landmark clock tower ‘Old Joe’.

Raising the site above the floodplain provided the opportunity to elevate the studio accommodation, supporting privacy while orientating the spaces to take advantage of the connectivity with the immediacy of the surrounding mature landscape and the new courtyard. The importance of this external connectivity was a focal point of the vision.

357 self-contained studios, within three distinct blocks, form a courtyard. The residents have access to a range of recreational and academic spaces located in the ‘hub’. The space offers private dining facilities, study rooms for individual or joint use, a gaming lounge and lounge areas, a movie room, a gymnasium, and a grab-and-go refreshment bar. The facility is managed 24 hours with ease of access to reception and the management suite.

The communal hub forms part of the entrance experience and welcomes all. Being centrally located provides ease of access to all residential wings, supporting facilities and the courtyard. The development was tailored to support all aspects of student life, including social activities and study, all within a safe and secure environment.

Spotlight

Opening in 1971, the BBC established the first television studios complex, outside of London, on the outskirts of Birmingham City Centre, in Edgbaston. As well as being the home of Midlands Today and BBC Radio WM, programmes produced at Pebble Mill included The Archers, Top Gear, Doctors, Telly Addicts and Gardeners’ World. The site was cleared, following the relocation of the BBC to a different site within Birmingham, with a vision to build a leading technology and science park as part of Birmingham City Councils technology corridor masterplan. Located within Edgbaston Medical Quarter, the prominent site is now creating a world-class medical and life science campus.
