The brief was to provide 61 extra care apartments and 16 long-term specialist residential bedrooms for older adults suffering from complex age related illnesses. The scheme incorporates various communal facilities as well as associated lounge/dining spaces and a day opportunities space.
The amount of development is contained within a 3 and 2 storey proposal, with the footprint of the development nestled fairly central within the site. This ensures the proposal is subservient in terms of its location on the site to the neighbouring listed building, creating opportunities for landscaped courtyards, gardens and parking towards the front and side.
Each 2-bed apartment is designed to be a minimum of 63sqm and each 1-bed apartment is designed to be a minimum of 54sqm, providing generous accommodation and being suitable for wheelchair adaptation if required. The mix of the number of apartments and the communal space reflects a split of approximately 65%/35% (residential to communal). Generous and flexible space allowance is used to accommodate wheelchairs, zimmer frames in the corridors, lounge, and dining rooms; particularly to meet the needs of people with Dementia.
