As part of the Free Schools initiative, GNA, alongside Morgan Sindall, were appointed to deliver a Sikh Faith School in Wolverhampton. In collaboration with the Department for Skills and Education, we worked with Khalsa Academies Trust to transform a vacant office development and associated land into a highly successful secondary school.

The redevelopment of the former Tarmac headquarters site faced many challenges, including contaminated land, extensive mine shafts, subsidence of land affecting existing buildings and an odour abatement issue. We successfully overcame all challenges through a collaborative approach to design and build. This helped us achieve a safe and educational environment for all to use.

The scope included:

  • The refurbishment of an existing 4-storey office building into the main teaching block and entrance building
  • Partial demolition of the rear of the existing canteen building and refurbishment of the existing, along with a new side extension, allowing the school to offer the addition of food technology and music facilities
  • The erection of a new build sports hall/main hall with associated changing facilities and reception area.
  • The redesign of the external car park area into a recreation space, including a 3G pitch, MUGA, tennis courts, habitat zone and general social spaces.
