John Taylor Free School is a new build 8-form entry secondary school, situated on the outskirts of Burton-upon-Trent in Staffordshire. Located on a greenfield site the school is set within the new masterplan, next to a newly proposed housing development, and is the first new build secondary school in Staffordshire for nearly 50 years.
The buildings are set within an extensive landscape with the wooded Battlestead Hill forming the backdrop. The proposed school will accommodate 1,440 pupils which also includes provision for sixth form students, addressing the demand for increased school places for the expanding town.
GNA worked closely with the design and development team at Entrust to develop the proposals. Extensive stakeholder engagement was undertaken to ensure that the exciting vision of the client was expressed whilst offering efficient educational provision for all. The solution resulted in the form of an academic teaching superblock with separate sports hall and changing pavilion buildings, with a dramatic cantilevered library, and sixth form spaces, revealing the principle entrance to the main building.
