The Florence Shipley centre is one of several specialist residential care facilities in Derbyshire, for the elderly living with dementia or other complex needs. The project is one of two sister developments procured by Derbyshire County Council to provide bespoke, high-quality, modern buildings that are dementia friendly and will promote independence, wellbeing and dignity having been specifically designed with the end users in mind.
The accommodation consists of 16 long-term en-suite bedrooms arranged in 8-bed clusters with associated dining and lounge areas, 8 respite en-suite bedrooms and 8 intermediate care bedrooms. The project also includes facilities for the wider community including a restaurant, café, hairdressing room, activity rooms, prayer room, full production kitchen, physiotherapy and consultancy rooms, and treatment facilities as well as day services including a regular programme of social activities, hobbies, and leisure interests.
Furthermore, the building offers long-term residential care for older people in a secure environment, with short-term intermediate care, respite care and rehabilitation as well as a range of health and social care support, in partnership with other agencies including local NHS services. It also facilitates interaction with the public as it encourages the use of the communal facilities by providing a visual and physical link with the market square.
Whilst it was a challenge to work within the existing topography and constraints of the site, it has resulted in a proposal that ensures both residents and visitors are afforded good access to the landscaped gardens and great views over the Amber Valley.
Florence Shipley has achieved a gold standard accreditation by the University of Stirling and was also the winner of the Best Dementia Care Development Award at the Building Better Healthcare Awards 2016.
